Alberta has produced some of Canada’s most celebrated playwrights, with Sharon Pollock standing as the province’s most famous and influential figure. Born in New Brunswick but deeply connected to Alberta through her decades of work at the University of Calgary and her founding of General Store Theatre in Edmonton, Pollock won the prestigious Governor General’s Award for Drama and received multiple Canada Council grants. Her groundbreaking plays include Blood Relations, which explores the tragic 1875 Lily Domerset case in Ontario, and The Unplanned Child, which tackled difficult social issues. Gord Pengilly serves as a dramaturge for the Alberta Playwrights Network, helping writers develop their plays, while Gisèle Villeneuve also works as a dramaturge supporting the community. These modern writers continue the legacy started by Sharon Pollock and the APN founders, ensuring Alberta remains a major center for Canadian theatre with strong regional storytelling and innovative voices that reflect the province’s unique culture.
